আন-নূর: 40

Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allāh has not granted light - for him there is no light.

Or [the state of a disbeliever] is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with a great wave topped by a great wave, topped by dark clouds, darkness, one above another, if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light.

Or (their deeds) are like layers of darkness in a vast deep sea overwhelmed by a wave, above which there is another wave, above which there are clouds - layers of darkness, one above the other. When one puts forth his hand, he can hardly see it; and the one to whom Allah does not give light can have no light at all.

Or its similitude is that of depths of darkness upon an abysmal sea, covered by a billow, above which is a billow, above which is cloud, creating darkness piled one upon another; when he puts forth his hand, he would scarcely see it. He to whom Allah assigns no light, he will have no light.

Or as darkness on a vast, abysmal sea. There covereth him a wave, above which is a wave, above which is a cloud. Layer upon layer of darkness. When he holdeth out his hand he scarce can see it. And he for whom Allah hath not appointed light, for him there is no light.

Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light!

অথবা (কাফিরদের অবস্থা) বিশাল গভীর সমুদ্রে গভীর অন্ধকারের ন্যায়, যাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে রেখেছে ঢেউয়ের উপরে ঢেউ, তার উপরে মেঘ, একের পর এক অন্ধকারের স্তর, কেউ হাত বের করলে সে তা একেবারেই দেখতে পায় না। আল্লাহ যাকে আলো দান করেন না, তার জন্য কোন আলো নেই।

অথবা (তাদের আমলসমূহ) গভীর সমূদ্রে ঘনিভূত অন্ধকারের মত, যাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে ঢেউয়ের উপরে ঢেউ, তার উপরে মেঘমালা। অনেক অন্ধকার; এক স্তরের উপর অপর স্তর। কেউ হাত বের করলে আদৌ তা দেখতে পায় না। আর আল্লাহ যাকে নূর দেন না তার জন্য কোন নূর নেই।

অথবা (কাফিরদের কাজ) প্রমত্ত সমুদ্রের বুকে গভীর অন্ধকারের ন্যায়, যাকে উদ্বেলিত করে তরঙ্গের উপর তরঙ্গ, যার উপরে রয়েছে ঘন কালো মেঘ, একের উপর এক অন্ধকার। তার হাতকে বের করলে সে তা আদৌ দেখতে পায়না। আল্লাহ যাকে জ্যোতি দান করেননা তার জন্য কোন জ্যোতি নেই।

অথবা তাদের কাজ গভীর সাগরের তলের অন্ধকারের মত, যাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে তরংগের উপর তরঙ্গ, যার ঊর্ধ্বে মেঘপুঞ্জ, অন্ধকারপুঞ্জ স্তরের উপর স্তর, এমনকি সে হাত বের করলে তা আদৌ দেখতে পাবে না। আর আল্লাহ্‌ যার জন্য নূর রাখেননি তার জন্য কোনো নূরই নেই।

অথবা তাদের কর্ম গভীর সমুদ্র তলের অন্ধকার সদৃশ, যাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে তরঙ্গের ওপর তরঙ্গ, যার ঊর্ধ্বে মেঘপুঞ্জ, অন্ধকারপুঞ্জ স্তরের ওপর স্তর, এমনকি সে হাত বের করলে তা আদৌ দেখতে পাবে না। আল্লাহ যাকে জ্যোতি দান করেন না তার জন্য কোন জ্যোতিই নেই।

৪০. অথবা তাদের আমলগুলো গভীর সাগরের অন্ধকারের ন্যায় যার উপর ঢেউ রয়েছে। সেই ঢেউয়ের উপর আবার অন্য ঢেউ রয়েছে। তার উপর আবার মেঘ রয়েছে যা পথপ্রদর্শক নক্ষত্রগুলোকে ঢেকে রাখে। অন্ধকারগুলো একের উপর আরেকটি স্তূপীকৃত। এ অন্ধকারগুলোতে পতিত ব্যক্তি যখন নিজের হাতটা বের করে তখন সে কঠিন অন্ধকারের দরুন তাও দেখতে পায় না। তেমনিভাবে একজন কাফির ব্যক্তি। তার উপর স্তূপীকৃত হয়েছে অজ্ঞতা, সন্দেহ, অস্থিরতা ও অন্তরের মোহরের অন্ধকারগুলো। বস্তুতঃ আল্লাহ তা‘আলা যাকে ভ্রষ্টতা থেকে উদ্ধারের জন্য হিদায়েতের তাওফীক এবং তাঁর কিতাবের জ্ঞান দিবেন না তখন তার জন্য কোন হিদায়েতই থাকবে না যা দ্বারা সে সঠিক পথের দিশা পাবে। না তার জন্য কোন কিতাব থাকবে যা দ্বারা সে আলোকিত হতে পারবে।
