And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allāh or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] battle, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allāh is most knowing of what they conceal -

And that He might test the hypocrites, it was said to them: "Come, fight in the Way of Allah or (at least) defend yourselves." They said: "Had we known that fighting will take place, we would certainly have followed you." They were that day, nearer to disbelief than to Faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah has full knowledge of what they conceal.

and in order to know those who are hypocrites. It was said to them, “Come on, fight in the way of Allah, or defend.” They said, “Had we known it to be a fight we would have certainly followed you.” That day, they were nearer to disbelief than they were to Belief. They utter from their mouths what is not in their hearts. Allah knows well what they conceal.

and those who are hypocrites. And when these hypocrites were asked: 'Come and fight in the wayof Allah', or (at least) 'defend yourselves', they answered: 'If we but knew that there would be fighting, we would certainly have followed. They were nearer then to infidelity than to faith. They utter from their mouths what is not in their hearts. Allah knows well what they conceal.

And that He might know the hypocrites, unto whom it was said: Come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend yourselves. They answered: If we knew aught of fighting we would follow you. On that day they were nearer disbelief than faith. They utter with their mouths a thing which is not in their hearts. Allah is Best Aware of what they hide.

And the Hypocrites also. These were told: "Come, fight in the way of Allah, or (at least) drive (The foe from your city)." They said: "Had we known how to fight, we should certainly have followed you." They were that day nearer to Unbelief than to Faith, saying with their lips what was not in their hearts but Allah hath full knowledge of all they conceal.

আর মুনাফিকদেরকেও জেনে নেয়া। তাদেরকে বলা হয়েছিল; এসো, ‘আল্লাহর পথে যুদ্ধ কর, কিংবা (কমপক্ষে) নিজেদের প্রতিরক্ষার ব্যবস্থা কর’। তখন তারা বলল, ‘যদি আমরা জানতাম যুদ্ধ হবে, তাহলে অবশ্যই তোমাদের অনুসরণ করতাম’। তারা ঐ দিন ঈমানের চেয়ে কুফরীরই নিকটতম ছিল, তারা মুখে এমন কথা বলে যা তাদের অন্তরে নেই, যা কিছু তারা গোপন করে আল্লাহ তা বিশেষরূপে জ্ঞাত আছেন।

আর যাতে তিনি জেনে নেন মুনাফিকদেরকে। আর তাদেরকে বলা হয়েছিল, ‘এসো, আল্লাহর পথে লড়াই কর অথবা প্রতিরোধ কর’। তারা বলেছিল, ‘যদি আমরা লড়াই হবে জানতাম* তবে অবশ্যই তোমাদেরকে অনুসরণ করতাম’। সেদিন তারা কুফরীর বেশি কাছাকাছি ছিল তাদের ঈমানের তুলনায়। তারা তাদের মুখে বলে, যা তাদের অন্তরসমূহে নেই। আর তারা যা গোপন করে সে সম্পর্কে আল্লাহ অধিক অবগত। *এর দু’টি অর্থ হতে পারে- যদি আমরা লড়াই করতে জানতাম অথবা লড়াই সংঘটিত হবে বলে জানতাম।

আর তদ্দারা তিনি মুনাফিকদেরকে পরিচিত করেন; এবং তাদেরকে বলা হয়েছিলঃ এসো, আল্লাহর পথে সংগ্রাম কর অথবা শত্রুদেরকে প্রতিহত কর; তারা বলেছিলঃ যদি আমরা জানতাম যে, লড়াই হবে তাহলে অবশ্যই আমরা তোমাদের অনুগমন করতাম। তারা সেদিন বিশ্বাস অপেক্ষা অবিশ্বাসের নিকটবর্তী ছিল; তাদের অন্তরে যা নেই তা’ই তারা মুখে বলে থাকে; তারা যে বিষয় গোপন করে আল্লাহ তা জ্ঞাত আছেন।

আর যাতে তিনি জেনে নেন মুনাফিকদেরকে। আর তাদেরকে বলা হয়েছিল, ‘এস, তোমরা আল্লাহ্‌র পথে যুদ্ধ কর অথবা প্রতিরোধ কর।’ তারা বলেছিল, ‘যদি যুদ্ধ জানতাম তবে নিশ্চিতভাবে তোমাদের অনুসরণ করতাম’। সেদিন তারা ঈমানের চেয়ে কুফরীর কাছাকাছি ছিল। যা তাদের অন্তরে নেই তারা তা মুখে বলে এবং তারা যা গোপন রাখে আল্লাহ তা অধিক অবগত।

এবং এর দ্বারা আরো তিনি জেনে নেন কে মুনাফিক। তাদেরকে বলা হয়েছিল, এসো, আল্লাহর পথে সংগ্রাম কর অথবা তাদেরকে প্রতিরোধ কর; তারা বলেছিল, যদি আমরা জানতাম তোমাদের ও তাদের মধ্যে যুদ্ধ হবে তবে অবশ্যই আমরা তোমাদের অনুসরণ করতাম। তারা সেদিন বিশ্বাস অপেক্ষা অবিশ্বাসের অধিক নিকটবর্তী ছিল; তাদের অন্তরে যা নেই তাই তারা মুখে বলে থাকে এবং তারা যে বিষয় গোপন করে, আল্লাহ তা পরিজ্ঞাত।

১৬৭. আর মুনাফিকরাও যেন প্রকাশ পায়। তাদেরকে যখন বলা হয়, তোমরা আল্লাহর পথে যুদ্ধ করো অথবা মুসলমানদের সংখ্যা বাড়িয়ে কাফিরদেরকে প্রতিহত করো। তখন তারা বলে: আমরা যদি জানতাম সেখানে যুদ্ধ হবে তাহলে আমরা তোমাদেরই অনুসরণ করতাম। তবে আমরা তাদের ও তোমাদের মাঝে কোন যুদ্ধ হবে এমন মনে করি না। এমতাবস্থায় তারা তখন ঈমানের চেয়েও কুফরির বেশি নিকটবর্তী। বস্তুতঃ তারা মুখ দিয়ে এমন কথা বলে যা তাদের অন্তরে নেই। আর আল্লাহ তা‘আলা তাদের অন্তরের গোপনীয় সব কিছুই জানেন। তাই অচিরেই তিনি তাদেরকে এর জন্য শাস্তি দিবেন।
